Hi Fediverse πŸ‘‹

this is for everyone interested in supporting switching.software πŸ™‚

Here is my proposal on how to reorganize and improve the codebase of the website:

codeberg.org/swiso-en/website/

I would really appreciate your feedback - comment right here or on the issue πŸ—¨οΈ

Also, who would like to join the effort? And don't worry, we will figure out the "how" together - soon after the proposal is community-approved 😁

@switchingsoftware I really like your ideas πŸ‘ I wish I could help but I don't have much free time currently.Maybe I can help with new pages later or you can ask me whenever you need help but as I'm working on moving one of my forums to new software and own hardware,I can't help with completely rebuilding another page right now 😒

@succfemboi jeah, exactly - so happy about it, the cliffhanger at the end of season 1 was making me craaaaazy πŸ˜…

@switchingsoftware maybe you can join forces with our community at ptio , exposing eachothers website and get cross community action going :)

@blacklight447 Good idea, thanks for sharing it here! I will have a look, let's see what's possible there πŸ‘

@switchingsoftware The potential for automated extraction from the existing pages is high. However, I believe you are taking the correct strategy by defining a target format while leaving the method of page conversion into that format to the individual contributors. Nothing is slower than someone who swears their script will work tomorrow, and manual entry does function. This is the same blend of automation viability and manual entry which serves OSM so well. By modelling on a working instance of the same site type, you've eliminated all "new design" concerns. In short, I approve, and hope to find time to assist.

@switchingsoftware
I agree with the comments by JaredMoody - a static site generated from markdown would probably work best!

@DHeadshot I will have a look at static site generators - right now, I have no experience with then πŸ™ƒ

@switchingsoftware @DHeadshot I’m quite familiar with Jekyll, the generator that powers Github Pages, but there are many out there

@switchingsoftware Hi there, question: who are you?

Your bio says β€œformerly known as switching.social” but I spoke to the person who was running (and shut down – for personal reasons – switching.social) and they said they don’t know who’s running this and that they’re not involved.

Can you please clarify?

Thank you.

@kensanata @switchingsoftware @tobias Cool, thanks.

Would be nice if it was made clear that this is a new effort with credit to the previous (anonymous) author who wishes to remain anonymous.

@dajbelshaw @kensanata @switchingsoftware @tobias The β€œformerly known as” threw me off as it suggested that it changed names when it has changed maintainers and is being salvaged. (Which is great.)

@aral @kensanata @switchingsoftware @tobias I think the problem was that the former maintainer was anonymous, so no-one knew who to contact to take over the project! (it's a Fediverse version of the bus problem...)

@dajbelshaw @kensanata @switchingsoftware @tobias Yeah, and they wish to remain so. They had their reasons for switching it off. Sadly, it’s not my place to disclose them.

@switchingsoftware πŸ‘Œ Thank you so much. I’m sure the original author will also appreciate it if they happen upon it :)

@dajbelshaw Yeah, I agree. Perhaps you just had to see the boosts of that toot I linked to (and which is pinned on the account). For me, I was never in doubt.
@aral @switchingsoftware @tobias

@aral

It's a project to reconstruct the work from switching.social after disappearing.

It appeared after the original author disappeared without any notice from one day to the other.If you have contact to them, please tell that I and I guess a lot of other people, wish him the best :)

@tobias is currently reconstructing the website and resources.

(I'm just a bystander but enjoy both's work, the original switching.social as well as the new switching.software)

@switchingsoftware

@sheogorath @tobias @switchingsoftware Thanks for the background. I believe the original author is aware of how much we all appreciated/appreciate the resource.

Congrats on the effort to relaunch it, @tobias

PS. The original author may or may not be a he. They wish to remain anonymous.

@aral
If you have contact to the original author, could you talk to them about maybe transferring the switching.social domain in the spirit of 4042302?
It think the disappearance of the domain broke quite a lot of links out there that would profit from that.

@sheogorath @tobias @switchingsoftware

@ck @sheogorath @tobias @switchingsoftware I know it did and I hear you :( But as far as I can tell, they are done with it. And I don’t want to push.

@aral
Please thank whomever it was for all their work, a true treasure:)
